Ballantyne Presbyterian Church (founded under the name Cornerstone ARP Church) had its beginnings in the efforts of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) denomination to plant new churches. In June 1996, First Presbytery of North Carolina called Rev. Morrie Lawing to lead the effort of starting a new church in south Charlotte. While initially the church met for home bible studies and worship services privately (1997), services were opened to the public when they were held at Tower Place Movie Theatre in Pineville (1998).
In
1999, Sunday services were moved to the campus of Reformed
Theological Seminary. During this time, membership soon grew to 83
communicant members. On Feb. 6, 2000, First Presbytery authorized
the transition of Cornerstone from a mission church to an organized
church, and elders were elected and installed on March 11th.
In 1987, First Presbytery had purchased a 6-acre lot located on the
corner of Providence Road West and Community House Road in the
Ballantyne area. The land was deeded to Cornerstone from First
Presbytery in order to build its own meeting place. In May 2001,
Cornerstone voted to begin a building campaign, and eight months
later a groundbreaking ceremony was held on the church property. On
November 11, 2002, the new building was dedicated. In April 2005,
after many years of faithful and selfless service, Rev. Lawing
accepted a call to start a new church in Denver, NC under the name
Christ Church ARP.
In 2006, Rev. Frank Reich accepted the call to become the pastor of Cornerstone and served in this capacity for a year. In February 2007, Cornerstone changed its name to Ballantyne Presbyterian Church (Associate Reformed Synod).
Looking back on our history, it is evident the Lord has been faithful and abiding with us in our short pilgrimage thus far.
Where we are now...
Ballantyne Presbyterian Church is pleased to welcome Dr. John Currid to our pulpit as Interim Pastor during a time of transition in our church's life. Dr. Currid received his doctorate from the University of Chicago, and has over twenty years of teaching experience, his last post being Reformed Seminary's campus in Jackson, MS. He moved to Charlotte recently to teach in the Old Testament department at Reformed Seminary's Charlotte campus. Dr. Currid has served in the PCA as an ordained minister, and brings with him a deep love for and commitment to the local church.
We are truly blessed by this providence and are thankful for Dr. Currid's excellent expository preaching, wisdom in leadership, and pastoral heart for ministry. God is richly blessing our church family and granting us great spiritual growth and excitement for ministry in our community and beyond!
